YouTube caves to Trump with $24.5 million settlement

YouTube has settled a lawsuit filed by former President Donald Trump in 2021, agreeing to pay $24.5 million. The settlement includes $22 million to the Trust for the National Mall nonprofit to support the construction of the White House State Ballroom, and $2.5 million to other plaintiffs. This settlement is slightly less than the $25 million Meta (Facebook) agreed to pay in January, as Google executives were "eager to keep their settlement smaller than the one paid by rival Meta." X (Twitter) also settled for about $10 million in February. Trump was suspended from uploading new videos on YouTube in January 2021 after the attack on the Capitol, but the platform lifted the restrictions in March 2023, citing the need to allow voters to hear from major national candidates ahead of an election.
