Proton users can now add ’emergency’ contacts for backup access

Proton, a secure email and cloud storage service, has introduced a new "Emergency Access" feature that allows users to designate up to five trusted contacts who can access their Proton account in case of an emergency. The feature is available only to paying Proton customers, and the designated contacts must have their own Proton accounts to gain access. The user will be notified whenever a trusted contact tries to access their account, and they can choose the time period before access is granted, ranging from immediate to several months. This feature is designed to ensure that users' sensitive information remains accessible to trusted individuals in the event of travel, illness, or even death.
