Trump levies additional tariffs on ‘advanced computing chips’

The Trump administration has announced additional tariffs on "advanced computing chips," such as the Nvidia H200 and AMD MI325X, citing national security concerns. The tariffs will be set at 25%, but will not apply to chips imported to support the U.S. technology supply chain and domestic manufacturing capacity. The government also warned that broader tariffs on semiconductor imports and their derivative products may be imposed in the future, as part of a push to promote domestic semiconductor manufacturing. This comes after the administration previously used the threat of tariffs to pressure major chip manufacturers, such as TSMC, to invest in U.S. production facilities. Before this announcement, the Trump administration had already placed a 50% tariff on chips originating in China.
