X is launching a marketplace for inactive usernames, offering two categories of handles: priority handles for free and rare handles for a paid price ranging from $2,500 to over seven figures. The marketplace is aimed at attracting more paid subscribers, as securing a new handle will result in the old one being frozen. Users who downgrade their subscription will revert to their original username and lose access to the one they obtained through the marketplace. This initiative is being presented as an industry-first solution to redistribute unused handles, with eligible Premium subscribers able to search and request both complimentary and paid options.
