Lawyer caught using AI-generated false citations in court case penalised in Australian first
A Victorian lawyer has faced professional sanctions for using AI-generated false citations in a court case. The lawyer, who remained anonymous, provided the court with a list of prior cases that had been requested by Justice Amanda Humphreys. However, the lawyer failed to verify the authenticity of the citations, which were generated by AI. As a result, the lawyer has been stripped of his ability to practice as a principal lawyer, marking the first such case in Australia.
