Independent Football Regulator could seek prison sentences for rogue club owners

The proposed Independent Football Regulator (IFR) in England could seek prison sentences for rogue club owners who destroy documents sought by the regulator. Other sanctions under consideration include fines of up to 10% of a club's revenue and compelled sale of clubs. The IFR aims to assess the "honesty, integrity and financial soundness" of those currently or potentially running a club in the English professional game, in response to the financial difficulties experienced by clubs like Morecambe and Sheffield Wednesday. The government is seeking to fast-track the regulator's implementation, with the goal of activating its powers in the autumn. The proposals have been published for public consultation until October 6th.
