Itagaki's career began in 1992 with Tecmo Super Bowl, and he rose to fame in 1996 with the release of Dead or Alive. He later took charge of Team Ninja, the studio he founded, and led the production of the modern-day Ninja Gaiden series. Itagaki was known for his uncompromising and outspoken nature, which led to his resignation from Tecmo amidst claims of the company withholding a promised bonus. After leaving Tecmo, he founded Valhalla Game Studios and released Devil's Third, which received negative reviews. In 2021, Itagaki returned to game development with a new studio, Itagaki Games.
