Steam for Chromebooks is reportedly being discontinued
Google is reportedly discontinuing the Steam for Chromebooks beta program, with the service set to end on January 1, 2026. The joint effort to bring Steam to ChromeOS, announced at GDC 2022, aimed to make Chromebooks a viable platform for gaming. However, the idea never gained significant traction, likely due to the limited number of games that can run on the underpowered hardware found in most Chromebooks. After the release of a beta version of the Steam app in 2022, Google has now decided to retire the program, citing learnings that will inform the future of Chromebook gaming. Without Steam, users will have to rely on cloud gaming services like NVIDIA GeForce Now or Xbox Cloud Gaming, or the limited selection of Android games available on the platform.
