Uber and Lyft drivers in California are able to unionize under new law

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed legislation granting rideshare drivers in the state the right to unionize. This law, the second of its kind after Massachusetts, allows over 800,000 drivers working for companies like Uber and Lyft to collectively bargain for better pay, benefits, and working conditions. The law establishes a framework for union certification and bargaining processes, requiring support from at least 10% of active drivers for a driver organization to apply for union recognition, and 30% to begin bargaining on their behalf. Additionally, Newsom signed a measure reducing insurance coverage requirements for Uber and Lyft in accidents caused by uninsured drivers, as part of a September deal.
