Anthropic's Claude grabs top spot in App Store after Trump's ban

Anthropic's AI chatbot, Claude, has claimed the top spot on the App Store's Top Free Apps leaderboard, surpassing both ChatGPT and Google Gemini. This surge in popularity follows the news that President Trump has barred any federal agency from using Anthropic's Claude or other AI tools, after the company refused to concede on certain guardrails. Anthropic declined to have its AI models used for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons, leading to a "supply-chain risk" label from the Department of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Despite this setback, Anthropic has garnered significant user support, allowing Claude to dethrone OpenAI's ChatGPT as the most downloaded free app. While OpenAI has stepped in to fill the gap, agreeing to a deal with the Department of Defense, Anthropic's CEO, Sam Altman, has expressed concerns about the "extremely scary precedent" set by the company's blacklisting, hoping for a better resolution.
