Eggs Last Much Longer Than You Think. Here's How to Know for Sure

According to a food safety expert, eggs can last much longer than people typically think. The key is understanding how to properly store them and how to identify if they have gone bad. Eggs can generally be kept in the refrigerator for 3-5 weeks after the "sell-by" date, as long as they are stored properly. The expert advises storing eggs in their original carton in the coldest part of the fridge, rather than in the door. To check if an egg has gone bad, the expert recommends the float test - placing the egg in a bowl of cold water. If it sinks to the bottom and lays flat, it's very fresh. If it sinks but stands on end, it's a bit older but still good. If it floats to the top, it's gone bad and should be discarded. Following these simple storage and testing tips can help ensure eggs remain fresh and safe to consume for much longer than the average consumer may realize.
