Chess: Ukraine soldier grandmaster wins gold medal at European team championships

Ukrainian soldier and grandmaster Igor Kovalenko, ranked 48th in the world with a Fide rating of 2669, won the individual gold medal on the fourth board at the European team chess championships. Kovalenko, who has been a frontline soldier for three years, only began playing chess again a month ago. Ukraine was the most successful nation at the tournament, winning gold in the open event and silver in the women's event. Kovalenko's impressive performance included a key win against Serbia's 2024 European individual champion, Aleksander Indjic, and a draw with Gawain Maroroa Jones in the final round, when the Englishman was in pole position for the third board gold.
