Final Fantasy 14 Boss Addresses Mod Controversy After The Game Is Review-Bombed

Final Fantasy 14 (FF14) director Naoki Yoshida has addressed the recent controversy surrounding the removal of a popular mod, Mare Synchronos, which allowed players to display their customized avatars outside of their own game. The removal of this mod led to the game being review-bombed on Steam. Yoshida acknowledged that he tolerates mods and admires some fan-made creations, but he is against mods that violate the game's intent or design in a negative manner. He cited legal consequences in some countries over nude character mods and the potential devaluation of paid content from the game as examples of mods that could be problematic. Yoshida concluded his statement by respecting the tradition of modding in PC games, but he requested that players do so while respecting the rules and integrity of FF14. The game has recently expanded into the mobile realm and released its fifth expansion, Dawntrail. Yoshida also shared his intent to ensure that FF14 remains compatible with the PlayStation 4 for as long as possible, although the limitations of the PS4 hardware may make this less feasible going forward.
