YouTube is turning over age verification to AI
YouTube is implementing a new AI-based system to determine whether viewers should have a teen account. The system will assess user behaviors, such as the types of videos watched and the account's age, to identify users who may be under 18. Once an account is deemed to belong to a teen, YouTube will disable personalized advertising, activate digital wellbeing tools, and add other safeguards. This AI-powered approach has been used in other markets and is now being introduced in the US. However, if the system incorrectly estimates a user's age, they will have to verify their age using a credit card or government ID. This contrasts with Meta's similar tool, which allows users to simply change their settings if the AI guesses their age incorrectly.
