OpenAI will not disclose GPT-5’s energy use. It could be higher than past models
OpenAI has released a new version of its AI model, GPT-5, which is expected to have significantly higher energy consumption compared to its previous versions. Experts working on benchmarking the resource use of AI models have stated that the enhanced capabilities of GPT-5 come at a steep cost in terms of energy usage. While a request for a simple recipe using ChatGPT (the previous model) might have consumed around 2 watt-hours of electricity, the same request to the new GPT-5 model could potentially require 20 times more energy. However, OpenAI has chosen not to disclose the energy use of GPT-5, making it difficult to accurately assess the environmental impact of the model's increased capabilities.
