Magdeleine Vallieres hits heights to win Canada’s first world road race title

Magdeleine Vallieres, a 24-year-old Canadian cyclist, won the women's road race at the Road World Championships in Kigali, Rwanda. Vallieres broke away from a lead group that included New Zealand's Niamh Fisher-Black and Spain's Mavi García on the final climb, and held on to win by 23 seconds. Fisher-Black finished second, and García third. The victory marked Canada's first-ever road race world title. The pre-race favorites were caught out and could not respond to Vallieres' decisive attack, finishing in the chasing group behind the podium.
