Heat stress and extreme weather threaten 2026 World Cup, report finds

The 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America is facing serious climate-related challenges, according to a new report. The "Pitches in Peril" study found that 10 out of the 16 host venues are at a very high risk of experiencing extreme heat stress conditions. By 2050, nearly 90% of the stadiums will require adaptation to cope with extreme heat, and one-third will face water demand that equals or exceeds supply. The report suggests that the 2026 World Cup may be the last in North America without urgent climate adaptation measures. It also highlights the growing risks for future World Cup tournaments in 2030 and 2034. The findings underscore the need for sports organizations to prioritize environmental sustainability and resilience in the face of the escalating impacts of climate change.
