‘Much fairer’: all profits from new Orkney windfarm to benefit locals

The Orkney Islands Council has secured £62 million in financing from the UK's national wealth fund to build a large-scale, publicly-owned windfarm on three Orkney islands. The project, set to begin construction in 2027, is expected to become the UK's largest publicly-owned windfarm, with up to 18 turbines. Notably, all the profits from the windfarm will be reinvested into local services, benefiting every Orkney islander. This approach is seen as a "much fairer" model, where the community directly enjoys the economic benefits of renewable energy generation, rather than profits going to private companies.
