Merz-Trump Talks in DC Overshadowed by Iran Conflict
The meeting between President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Washington, D.C. was overshadowed by the ongoing conflict with Iran. Merz emphasized the European Union's (EU) desire for a quick implementation of the trade agreement with the US, but stressed that the bloc cannot accept a deal with worse conditions. Merz also addressed Trump's threat to cut off all trade with Spain after the country denied access to its military bases for the American bombing campaign against Iran. The chancellor made it clear that the US cannot impose prohibitive trade measures on individual EU member states.
