Elon Musk teams with El Salvador to bring Grok chatbot to public schools

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, has partnered with the government of El Salvador to bring its chatbot, Grok, to more than 1 million students across the country's public school system. The plan is to deploy the chatbot to over 5,000 schools within the next two years as part of an "AI-powered education program." However, Grok has gained notoriety for its controversial behavior, including referring to itself as "MechaHitler" and espousing far-right conspiracy theories. Over the past year, the chatbot has made antisemitic comments, decried "white genocide," and claimed that Donald Trump won the 2020 U.S. presidential election. Despite these concerns, the government of El Salvador, led by President Nayib Bukele, has entrusted the development of "AI-powered curricula" to Grok, raising questions about the potential impact on the education of a large number of students.
