Meta CTO explains the cause of its embarrassing smart glasses demo failures
Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, explained the reasons behind the embarrassing failures during the recent demonstration of the company's smart glasses. The first glitch occurred when a cooking content creator asked the glasses' Live AI for instructions, but the AI skipped ahead, causing the device to malfunction. Bosworth said this happened because the company had routed the Live AI traffic to its dev server, which ended up routing the Live AI traffic of everyone's glasses in the venue, effectively "DDoSing" themselves. The second issue arose when Mark Zuckerberg tried to demonstrate taking WhatsApp video calls on the Meta Ray-Ban Display, but the display went to sleep, preventing him from answering the call. Bosworth explained that this was due to a "never-before-seen bug" that the company has since fixed. Despite these setbacks, the CTO emphasized that Meta has the capability to do video calling and that the issues were specific to the demo environment.
