Malware strikes Steam again as game update hides crypto trojan

In this news article, it is reported that the popular PC gaming platform Steam has been targeted by a growing number of malware attacks. The latest incident involves a free-to-play game called BlockBlasters, which allegedly contained a trojan with a "cryptodrainer" program in a post-launch update. This malware was able to steal approximately $150,000 from hundreds of individual Steam users, including a streamer who lost over $30,000 while raising funds for their cancer treatment. Security researchers have identified the malware as one that seeks out and steals Steam login information, as well as associated cryptocurrency wallet accounts, which were then drained. The operators seem to have targeted streamers and Twitter users known to be invested in cryptocurrency through a spearphishing campaign. While a US-based suspect has been identified through leaked Telegram information, there have been no arrests so far. Valve, the company behind Steam, has not commented on the investigation. This is the fourth high-profile example of malware making its way onto Steam and being downloaded by the general public in 2025, following similar incidents in July, March, and February.
