GTA History Class Is Coming To This American College Ahead Of GTA 6's Release

The University of Tennessee in Knoxville is offering a new American history class called "Grand Theft America: US History Since 1980 through the GTA Video Games," starting in January. The course, taught by history professor Tore Olsson, will use the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) video game series as a framework to explore and understand significant events in recent US history, such as the LA Riots of 1992. Olsson believes that popular video games can shape our real-world views and hopes that after the class, students will have a deeper understanding of both the games and modern America. While playing the GTA games is not required, Olsson will showcase gameplay during class. This course is the first of its kind, with only Wilfred Laurier University in Canada offering a GTA-related class before. Olsson has previously used the Red Dead Redemption series to teach US history between 1899-1911.
