Windows 95 just turned 30 — and it’s still being used to sort farm eggs

Windows 95, a 30-year-old operating system, is still being used to sort farm eggs in a farm near Düsseldorf, Germany. The egg sorting machine, which is about 40 by 40 meters in size, processes up to 40,000 eggs per day, separating them according to size, weight, and origin. The farmer, Peter Huber, says that the Windows 95-powered machine has been running smoothly for decades, and if something hangs, he just reboots it, and it boots up again on its own. The software's primary purpose is to register the results of the sorting and processing, and an equally ancient Brother printer, which is still compatible with Windows 95, takes care of the screen printouts. Huber is not considering buying a new egg sorting machine because a new machine would cost as much as a house and wouldn't do much more than the existing one.
