The US claims it just strongarmed Taiwan into spending $250 billion on American chip manufacturing

The US has reached a deal with Taiwan to lower tariffs on Taiwanese goods in exchange for a $250 billion investment in American chip manufacturing. Under the agreement, tariffs on goods from Taiwan will be reduced from 20 to 15 percent, while Taiwanese tech companies will invest heavily in building and expanding chipmaking facilities in the US. The Taiwanese government will also provide at least $250 billion in credit to support these investments. The move comes after President Trump threatened to impose a 100 percent tariff on chips and semiconductors not made in the US, which Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick says is still a possibility. The deal is seen as a strategic move by the US to bolster its domestic chip production capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.
