Office 365 gets new ‘companion apps’ that live in the Windows taskbar
Microsoft has introduced new "companion apps" for Office 365, which are mini-apps that live in the Windows taskbar. These apps provide access to basic functions of complex applications without requiring users to open the full app. The new companion apps are currently available for Microsoft 365 People, File Search, and Calendar, but they are only accessible to Windows 11 users whose administrators have opted into the beta program. The apps allow users to perform tasks like searching for contacts, previewing and sharing cloud files, and joining Teams calls without fully opening the respective applications. These companion apps are similar to widgets, but Microsoft has not yet committed to bringing widget support to Windows 11.
