Toyota and Pony.ai start mass producing robotaxis for China

Toyota and Pony.ai, a Chinese autonomous vehicle company, have started mass-producing the bZ4X robotaxi for deployment in China. The bZ4X is one of three autonomous vehicle models Pony.ai plans to use for its commercial ride-hailing services in major Chinese cities like Beijing and Shanghai. Pony.ai aims to have a fleet of 3,000 vehicles by the end of 2026. The bZ4X robotaxi comes equipped with Pony.ai's Gen-7 autonomous driving system, which includes features like Bluetooth-based automatic vehicle unlocking, in-cabin voice interaction, and integrated online music services. Pony.ai, founded in 2016 and headquartered in Silicon Valley, has been testing and operating self-driving vehicles in China and recently received permission to offer self-driving car services to the public. The company filed for an IPO in the US in 2024.
