Trump administration imposes a 25 percent tariff on high-end chips
The Trump administration has imposed a 25% tariff on certain advanced computing chips imported into the US for re-export to other countries. The tariff specifically targets AMD MI325X and NVIDIA H200 chips, although semiconductors imported for use in products sold in the US or for data centers will not be affected. The administration had previously threatened much broader tariffs on chip imports, with Trump even suggesting a 100% tariff if companies did not invest in US semiconductor manufacturing. However, the current tariff is limited to high-end chips intended for re-export, with the White House acknowledging that the administration may still impose broader tariffs on semiconductor imports and related products in the future.
