Trump's FCC is officially moving to make it easier for internet companies to charge hidden fees
The Republican-led FCC has approved a proposal that would make it easier for internet service providers (ISPs) to hide fees from consumers. The proposal would scale back the "Broadband Facts" labels, which currently require ISPs to provide itemized bills with accurate information about the charges. The FCC claims that these transparency requirements are "unduly burdensome and provide minimal benefit to consumers." However, a 2024 study found an 85% satisfaction rate with the labels among nearly 5,000 broadband customers. The lone Democrat commissioner, Anna Gomez, criticized the proposal as "one of the most anti-consumer items" she has seen and questioned the FCC's rationale for the change. The proposal is expected to pass given the current political makeup of the commission. If implemented, the changes would make it more difficult for consumers to understand the true cost of their internet service, potentially allowing ISPs to charge hidden fees. This move comes as Americans already pay significantly more for internet service compared to many other countries.
