Togolese Protests Seeking President Gnassingbé’s Ouster Blocked

The Togolese government has blocked a protest organized by opposition parties and civil groups against the continued rule of President Faure Gnassingbé and his family, which has lasted for 58 years. Security forces were deployed to prevent the protesters from gathering. The protest was aimed at demanding the ouster of the president, who has been in power since 2005, following the death of his father, Gnassingbé Eyadéma, who had ruled Togo for 38 years. The Gnassingbé family's long-standing control over the country has been a source of widespread discontent, and the blocked protest is the latest in a series of efforts by the opposition to challenge the regime.
