New California law requires AI to tell you it’s AI

California has passed a new law, Senate Bill 243, which requires AI chatbot developers to clearly notify users if they are interacting with an AI system and not a human. The law aims to prevent users from being misled about the nature of the conversational partner. The legislation also mandates that some chatbot operators submit annual reports to the Office of Suicide Prevention on the safeguards they have implemented to detect, remove, and respond to instances of suicidal ideation by users. This data will be publicly available on the Office's website. The new law is part of a broader effort by the California government to improve online safety, particularly for children. It was signed alongside other measures, including age-gating requirements for hardware, to ensure that emerging technologies like AI and social media are developed responsibly while prioritizing user protection.
