Trump administration may use federal agencies to fight state-level AI regulation

The Trump administration is considering an executive order to block states from enacting their own AI regulations. The proposed order includes an "AI Litigation Task Force" run by the DOJ to counter state-level regulations. The administration believes a patchwork of varying state-level regulations would hinder the US in the global race for AI dominance. They have previously tried to add a 10-year moratorium on state AI regulation to a legislative bill, but it was voted down. The administration's AI Action Plan also recommends withholding federal funding from states with "burdensome AI regulations." However, the plan also states the federal government should not "interfere with states' rights to pass prudent laws." This issue is heating up, with the president and some lawmakers voicing opposing views on the appropriate balance between federal and state authority over AI regulation.
