Amazon is closing all Fresh grocery stores in the UK
Amazon is closing all 14 of its Amazon Fresh grocery stores in the UK, while converting the remaining 5 stores to the Whole Foods Market brand. Instead of brick-and-mortar shops, the company will focus on online grocery deliveries in the region. By 2026, Amazon plans to add perishables to its Same-Day Delivery service in the UK, which was recently introduced in the US. This move follows a similar contraction in 2023, where Amazon closed some of its Fresh supermarkets and Go convenience stores that utilized the Just Walk Out technology. The Just Walk Out approach, which eliminated cashiers and charged customers based on cameras, sensors, and video monitoring, raised concerns about cost, accuracy, and privacy, leading Amazon to stop using it in its US Fresh stores last year.
