Sony's holiday PS5 sales dropped 16 percent compared to last year

Sony's PlayStation 5 console sales during the holiday season dropped by 16% compared to the same period last year. Despite this decline, the company has now shipped a total of 92.2 million PS5 units worldwide. The gaming division's profit increased due to a boost in software sales and a favorable exchange rate. While the first two quarters of the fiscal year saw an increase in PS5 sales, the holiday season's sales were an outlier, with 9.5 million units sold in the same period the previous year. Software sales remained exceptional, with 97.2 million games sold, and a record 132 million monthly active users on the PlayStation Network. Sony is preparing to release several new games for the PS5, including Resident Evil Requiem, Avowed, and Bungie's Marathon. Analysts believe the PS5 is likely to have a longer life cycle than the PS4, which was replaced after seven years, due to continued strong sales, high RAM prices, and recent hardware updates. When the PS6 does arrive, it is expected to offer triple the performance of the current generation.
