Google announced the next step in its nuclear energy plans

Google is collaborating with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to purchase electricity from a next-generation nuclear reactor developed by Kairos Power in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This power purchase agreement is the first of its kind for such advanced nuclear technology in the US. The plan is for TVA to supply electricity from the Kairos Power Hermes 2 reactor, expected to be operational by 2030, to Google's data centers in Tennessee and Alabama. This partnership aims to help revive the nuclear energy industry in the US, which has struggled to compete with cheaper electricity from natural gas, solar, and wind. Kairos Power's technology uses molten fluoride salt as a coolant, allowing for a lower-pressure reactor design that could reduce costs. The Hermes 2 demonstration plant is the first non-water-cooled reactor to receive a construction permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in over 50 years. Google's goal is to help Kairos deploy 500 megawatts of new nuclear capacity in the US by 2035, contributing to the company's efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. The clean energy attributes generated by the Hermes 2 plant will also be purchased by Google to offset its emissions.
