Volvo promises software improvements for buggy EX90 SUV

Volvo's EX90 SUV, intended to lead the company's electrification efforts, has been plagued by various issues since its launch. To address these problems, Volvo is now promising software improvements, including a new 800-volt architecture for better charging and a computer powered by Nvidia's Drive AGX Orin system-on-a-chip, which will enable enhanced safety, collision avoidance, and driver support features. Additionally, Volvo is introducing new safety features such as Emergency Stop Assist, which can bring the car to a controlled stop in its lane if the driver fails to respond to warnings. The company is also making a significant $1.3 billion investment in its Charleston, South Carolina factory to increase production by 50% over the next five years, focusing on mild and plug-in hybrid XC60 models as well as a new, unnamed "next-generation hybrid model" by 2030. Despite these efforts, Volvo's sales have been declining, with only 49,273 cars sold globally in August 2025, a 14% drop year-over-year and the lowest volume so far in the year.
