Meet Surya, a New AI Model From NASA and IBM That Can Predict Solar Flares

NASA and IBM have developed a new AI model called Surya that can predict solar flares, which are powerful bursts of radiation from the Sun. Solar flares can disrupt communication systems, GPS, and power grids on Earth, and they can also trigger auroras. Surya uses a deep learning algorithm to analyze data from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory and other sources to identify patterns that precede solar flares. The model has been trained on over a decade of solar data and can predict solar flares up to 24 hours in advance with an accuracy of 83%. This improved forecasting capability could help NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) better prepare for the impact of solar flares and provide more accurate aurora forecasts.
