Live updates: Total solar eclipse sweeps across Europe | CNN
The celestial show marked the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe in more than two decades. ⢠Spectacular show: A total solar eclipse swept through Europe and millions flocked to prime viewing locations across Iceland and Spain to witness the rare spectacle. ⢠The next eclipse: This was the first time since 1905 that mainland Spain could see the moon completely block the sun. But the wait for the next such phenomenon will not be that long. The next total solar eclipse will pass over southern Spain, North Africa, Saudi Arabia and Yemen on August 2, 2027, according to NASA. ⢠The US must wait longer: The contiguous US must wait until August 22, 2044, when totality will only occur over North Dakota and Montana. CNNâs live coverage of the total solar eclipse across parts of Europe has ended. Check out the best shots of the rare spectacle here. A total solar eclipse occurring on August 2, 2027, is âthe one to be at because it will actually be the longest eclipse in the remainder of our lifetimes,â said Dr. Ryan French, solar astrophysicist at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics in Boulder, Colorado, and coauthor of âLittle Book of Eclipses.â
