The IRS' free tax-filing tool reportedly won't be offered in 2026

The IRS' free tax-filing tool, Direct File, reportedly won't be offered in 2026. Direct File was a Biden administration project designed to provide an easy and free way for eligible taxpayers to file their taxes online, without having to pay for a service like TurboTax or H&R Block. The IRS began piloting Direct File for the 2024 tax season and made it a permanent option in 2025, with the service available in 25 states. However, the Trump administration appears to be opposed to offering Direct File in its current form. The "Big Beautiful Bill" passed in July 2025 includes funding for the IRS to research the cost of replacing or developing a free direct e-file tax return system. Former IRS Commissioner Billy Long has suggested that Direct File has been eliminated. While the IRS has not formally announced the end of Direct File, the tool is currently unavailable on the IRS website, and the position to lead the project is vacant.
