California just passed three bills to boost internet privacy

California has passed three new bills to enhance internet privacy for its residents. The most significant one, AB 566, builds on the existing California Consumer Privacy Act by requiring web browsers to offer a universal opt-out option for users to prevent third parties from selling their data. This gives Californians a single setting to decline data sharing across multiple websites. Two other bills, SB 361 and AB 656, also aim to empower internet users. SB 361 strengthens the Data Broker Registration Law, providing consumers with more information about their personal data collected by brokers. AB 656 mandates social media companies to make account cancellation and personal data deletion clear and straightforward. These new laws demonstrate California's commitment to protecting the digital privacy of its citizens, giving them more control over their personal information online. The passage of these bills is a significant step forward in the ongoing effort to safeguard individual privacy in the digital age.
