Lyft’s first ‘robotaxis’ are live in Atlanta

Lyft has launched its first customer-ready robotaxi pilot in Atlanta, partnering with May Mobility, a Michigan-based company backed by Toyota and BMW. The fleet consists of Toyota Sienna minivans equipped with sensors such as cameras, radar, and lidar, operating within a 7-square-mile service area in Midtown Atlanta. Lyft customers can choose to be matched with a May Mobility autonomous vehicle when requesting a ride. During the initial phase, the vehicles will have "standby operators" in the driver's seat, who are trained to take control and drive manually if needed. This approach is common in the industry, as companies aim to ensure safety during the rollout of their autonomous technology. Lyft is also working on other robotaxi partnerships, including with Benteler Mobility for a self-driving shuttle service in 2026 and a fleet of robotaxis using Intel's Mobileye technology in Dallas, also set to launch in 2026. The company's strategy is to stay "asset light," allowing other companies to own, operate, and maintain the robotaxi fleets for its customers.
