Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Still Doesn't Feel Like It Has An Identity Of Its Own

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, the upcoming kart racing game, is quickly approaching its release in September. The game allows players to race as various Sonic characters, as well as a few guest characters, across 24 different tracks. The unique gimmick of the game is that the second lap of each race takes place in a different world, chosen by the leading racer. While the game borrows mechanics from previous Sonic racing titles, such as Team Sonic Racing and Sonic Riders, the author feels that it lacks the distinct identity and challenge that made those games enjoyable. The customization features, including the kart plate system, do not seem to significantly impact the gameplay or encourage a different strategy. The author remains hopeful that the game will shine when played with friends, as the social aspect and competitive nature could make the experience more engaging. However, based on the hands-on preview, the game currently feels too similar to Mario Kart without the unique elements that set the Sonic racing series apart.
