Blade’s air taxis are coming to the Uber app

Blade Air Mobility, a helicopter taxi business, has been purchased by Joby Aviation for $125 million. Joby aims to eventually replace Blade's noisy, polluting helicopters with its quieter, battery-powered air taxis. As Joby awaits FAA certification, it has partnered with Uber to integrate Blade's helicopter services into the Uber app. The integration, expected to launch as soon as next year, will allow Uber customers to book helicopter rides from Blade's Manhattan-based landing pads to destinations like airports and the Hamptons. Blade has a robust helicopter transportation business, having flown over 50,000 passengers in 2024. Joby's acquisition of Blade provides the company with established routes, customers, and infrastructure, giving it a competitive edge as it works towards the certification of its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
