Chinese social media platforms roll out labels for AI-generated material

Major Chinese social media platforms, including WeChat, Douyin, Weibo, and RedNote, have started rolling out labels for AI-generated content to comply with a new law that took effect on Monday. The law, drafted by four government agencies, requires users to proactively apply labels to their AI-generated content, and prohibits the removal or tampering of such labels. The platforms have implemented various measures to detect and label AI-generated material, including the use of metadata and user reporting options. The goal is to help users better understand when they are viewing AI-generated content, which could be misinformation or inauthentic, rather than genuine content. This move is part of a broader effort by the Chinese government to regulate the surge of generative AI content and ensure transparency. In April, the Cyberspace Administration of China launched a three-month campaign to regulate AI apps and services, further underscoring the government's focus on addressing the challenges posed by the rapid development of AI technology.
