One in five inpatients left to wait in hospital corridors in England, CQC finds

The Care Quality Commission's survey of adults who stayed in English hospitals in November 2024 reveals significant challenges in the healthcare system. The report found that one in five patients had to wait in hospital corridors, with 1% even waiting in storage cupboards. Nearly 10% of patients waited more than 24 hours to be admitted, and over half waited more than six hours. The survey also highlighted issues with communication, as only 20% of patients who had to change wards during the night were given a clear explanation. Additionally, less than half of the respondents felt they received adequate support after leaving the hospital. However, the report did note some improvements, with a slight increase in the proportion of patients who felt there were enough nurses on duty and those who were able to get help from staff when needed.
