US 'Way Ahead' of Last Year for Rare Earths Operations, Says CSIS Critical Minerals Director

The US government has made securing rare earth minerals, which are crucial for military and high-tech applications, a top priority under the Trump administration. The US is currently ahead of where it was last year in terms of rare earth operations, according to Gracelin Baskaran, the Director of the CSIS Critical Minerals Security Program. The US is focusing on both domestic mining and processing production as well as operations abroad, including a newly announced $1 billion investment in the critical minerals supply chain in Congo. The goal is to reduce the country's reliance on foreign sources, particularly China, for these essential materials.
