Lab-grown meat does not a burger make, EU lawmakers insist

The European Union (EU) Parliament voted in favor of an amendment that would ban vegetarian and vegan products from using terms like "burger" and "sausage." The proposed regulation would also prevent cell-cultured or lab-grown meat from using these terms. The legislation aims to reserve these meaty terms exclusively for products containing actual meat, in an effort to support European livestock farmers. The amendment still needs to be approved by the EU Commission and member state governments before becoming law. If enacted, it would prohibit the use of terms such as "steak," "burger," "sausage," and "egg white" for non-meat products, including those made from plant-based or cell-cultured sources. This could pose a challenge for the emerging cultured meat industry, which would be unable to use familiar terms like "hamburger" for its products. The measure has faced opposition from supermarkets, climate groups, and even Burger King, who argue that it may limit consumer choice and innovation. The EU has previously set precedents for restricting the use of dairy terms for plant-based alternatives, and this latest proposal is seen as an effort to support the traditional livestock industry.
