Max Balard hits winner two minutes into debut to edge Socceroos past New Zealand

Max Balard, a new Socceroo, scored the winning goal two minutes after coming off the bench in Australia's 1-0 friendly victory over New Zealand in Canberra. The match was the first game of the 'Soccer Ashes' series between the two countries. Australia, fielding an experimental lineup without many of their regular starters, had a tough time creating clear-cut chances against the All Whites. However, Balard's late strike in the 87th minute proved to be the decisive moment, securing the win for the Socceroos in their first outing since qualifying for the 2023 World Cup in North America.
