America's Sovereign AI supercomputers will use AMD chips
AMD is collaborating with the US Department of Energy to build sovereign AI supercomputers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The company's products will power the Lux and Discovery supercomputers, which will be the DoE's flagship systems under the Trump administration's AI Action Plan. The $1 billion investment from private and public funding will enable the development of these supercomputers, which are expected to help researchers tackle challenges in energy, medicine, health, and national security. The Lux supercomputer, set to be deployed in 2026, will be powered by AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs, AMD EPYC CPUs, and AMD Pensando advanced networking technologies. The Discovery supercomputer, expected to be operational in 2029, will use next-gen AMD EPYC CPUs and AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs, including a new MI400 Series accelerator designed for sovereign AI and high-performance computing. The supercomputers are expected to drive scientific innovation and produce breakthroughs in areas such as nuclear energy safety and cost-effectiveness.
