Penn State fire James Franklin after disastrous collapse – and with coach owed nearly $50m

Penn State has fired their head football coach, James Franklin, after a disastrous start to the season. The Nittany Lions, ranked No. 2 in the preseason, have suffered a series of losses, effectively ending their chances of reaching the College Football Playoff. Franklin's contract was guaranteed through 2031, and he was owed nearly $50 million. The university has named Terry Smith as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Penn State's record currently stands at 3-3, with a 0-3 record in the Big Ten conference. The firing comes less than 24 hours after a 22-21 home loss to Northwestern, which all but sealed the team's fate.
